take part in some special projects that help us learn about academic areas and
the world around us.

Students from 42 schools throughout Illinois, in conjunction
with The Illinois State Museum and Brookfield Zoo, have developed
on-line projects that explore the rich natural and cultural diversity
of Illinois and world ecosystems. In its simplest terms,
"biological diversity is the variety of life at all levels; it
includes the array of plants and animals; the genetic differences
among individuals; the communities, ecosystems, and landscapes in
which they occur; and the variety of processes on which they
depend." Humans are an important part of the system as the world
has changed and will continue to change as a result of their
interaction in the environment, and each culture uniquely reflects
these changes and interactions. Long-term changes in human-land
interactions provide a backdrop for study of global issues such as
declining biodiversity, habitat loss and fragmentation, global
warming, and multicultural societies.
